Korea Quantum Computing Co., Ltd. (KQC), a company specializing in quantum computing R&D, quantum security, and AI infrastructure operations, announced that it has been selected for and has completed an agreement under the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF)-led national R&D program, “Quantum Advantage Challenge Research.” The selected project, titled “Quantum Computing–Based Optimization of Busan Urban Railway Scheduling,” is being carried out in collaboration with the Busan Transportation Corporation.
This project represents the first case in Korea to apply quantum computing to the optimization of public transportation operations. Using operational data from the Busan metro system, the research aims to derive optimal train headways and improve overall operational efficiency. By applying advanced quantum algorithms, the project analyzes complex interactions among multiple variables—including peak-hour congestion management, energy savings, and workforce efficiency—to develop a highly precise optimization model by the end of this year.
Building on this initiative, the Busan Transportation Corporation plans to actively introduce quantum computing across its management operations. By simultaneously computing and predicting complex operational variables, the organization aims to enhance efficiency and, in the future, extend quantum technologies to disaster preparedness and critical infrastructure maintenance.
Busan Transportation Corporation President Lee Byung-jin stated, “This collaboration goes beyond a simple technology demonstration and represents a meaningful attempt to translate quantum technology into tangible management outcomes. We expect its potential to expand beyond scheduling optimization to facility management and accident prevention.”
KQC Chairman Jay J.H. Kweon added, “Leveraging our quantum algorithm capabilities developed through the IBM Quantum System Hub and our proprietary hybrid quantum optimization framework, we will work closely with the Busan Transportation Corporation to enhance both the safety and efficiency of urban operations while expanding the industrial applicability of quantum technologies.”
Since 2021, KQC has been a member of the IBM Quantum Network, providing cloud access to IBM Quantum Systems and leading domestic efforts in quantum computing commercialization through algorithm development and applied research. With the recent launch of its AI GPU Farm, KQC is uniquely positioned as the only company in Korea offering both quantum computing and AI infrastructure.
